Essure And Adiana Tubal Occlusion
Both the Essure and the newer, Adiana Occlusions are similar and require the same procedure to reverse them. On November 5, 2007 our facility performed the first Essure Tubal Reversal, not only was it a first for our facility but to our knowledge we are the only facility that has done such procedure. We are expecting our first Essure Reversal baby in February. The Essure device has only been available for 5 years and the Adiana for less than a year, but we are now starting to see a higher number of requests to have this type of tubal occlusion reversed. The Essure and Adiana devices are supposed to be permanent and NOT REVERSIBLE, but at Lakeshore Surgical Center we have developed special instruments to perform this procedure. The procedure to reverse an Essure or Adiana is different then a standard tubal reversal. What is required is called a tubocornual implantation. The old way to do a tubocornual implantation was very hard to do and left the patient requiring a cesarean section for future pregnancies. With the way we perform this procedure at our facility this is no longer the case. To do this type of reversal, the Essure or Adiana device needs to be first carefully removed. The next step is to make a tiny, perfectly round hole in the wall of the uterus. Once the uterus is prepared, the tube is sewn deep into the lining of the womb. The tube is next sewn to the outside of the uterus to seal it off. After the repair is completed, we look inside the womb with a tiny camera to make sure the tube is where it belongs. The final step is the same for all reversals done here at Lakeshore Surgical Center, we dye test the tube to make sure it has been sewn open. We have just started to perform the Essure reversals at Lakeshore Surgical Center, and it will take a year to tell how successful our patients have been in getting pregnant after their reversal. The Adiana Occlusion device has been available for less than a year. We have not done an Adiana reversal yet. The procedure to reverse an Adiana Occlusion is identical to the procedure to reverse an Essure. We expect that our Essure and Adiana reversals will work just as well as our other reversals, because the Essure device leaves a lot of healthy tube to use. We have no argument with any doctor's method to reverse an Adiana or Essure Occlusion but ours does not require that delivery of subsequent pregnancies by c-section because it does not weaken the uterus. When we do our operation we insert the tube in the same part of the uterus, the cornu, as it was before. The advantage is a narrower incision, very little blood loss, and no need for c-section as a result. Because we sew the tube in place both inside and outside the uterus we can dye test the operation before you wake up to make sure it is open. The charge more to do an Essure or Adiana reversal is higher than our standard fee. Everything that is included in our normal fee is included with the Essure reversal, but because it takes two doctors to perform this procedure and it an additional hour to do our fee is a little bit higher. Please call our office and speak with one of our Case Management Specialist and they will be able to answer any questions you may have. Learn more about Essure Tubal Occlusion. |
